MEMORY AVALANCHE
In Memory Avalanche, Andrew Sutherland presents a new body of work that explores the elusive and layered nature of memory. Using photographs he’s taken over the past decade as a catalyst, he revisits fleeting moments, landscapes, and scenes that have quietly shaped his personal archive.
These paintings are not direct translations of the images but rather reflections on how memories resurface, shift, and blur with time. One recollection often sparks another, unraveling into a cascade of associations where emotions, fragments, and visual echoes collide. The result is a body of interconnected works that feel both intimate and expansive—rooted in lived experience yet open to interpretation.
Structure, rhythm, and the optical effects of colour dominate: shapes fold into one another, tones overlap, and recurring motifs surface like half-remembered dreams. Rather than merely represent his surroundings, Sutherland allows the interrelations of colour and form to describe how the world is felt and remembered.
Through layered mark-making and subtle distortions, Memory Avalanche reflects the overwhelming, tangled beauty of recollection—an avalanche not of singular memories but of their collective force when they come rushing back all at once. This exhibition marks a continued evolution in Sutherland’s practice—personal, poetic, and grounded in the visual language of travel, nostalgia, and time.
