Tall Tales

Andrew Sutherlands’ tenth solo entitled Tall Tales sees the artist adopt the voice of the story teller. Exaggerated plots of adventure unfold through a variety of mediums from oil paintings, oil pastels and paintings on ceramic, to large scale mixed media on canvas pieces. Close encounters with wild animals, great discoveries and near death experiences all play out in scenes reminiscent of passages from an old adventure novel or movie.

Transported into an imaginary space through engagements with a lively world of characters, landscapes and surfaces, Sutherland juxtaposes amusing and sometimes unlikely encounters with more pensive scenes and invites the viewer to participate in these somewhat grandiose tales. The conclusion is a mystery, left open to our imagination.
